How to Prepare a Strong CV (Resume) for Your Visa Application
A well-prepared CV is an essential part of Skilled Based Australian Visa Applications. Unlike a job application resume, a visa CV is designed to provide the Department with a clear and accurate overview of your employment and educational background.
1. Keep Your Career Summary Brief
Avoid including a lengthy career summary at the beginning of your CV. If you choose to include one, keep it to no more than three lines. Remember, this CV is for your visa application—not for applying for a new job.
2. List Your Employment in Reverse Chronological Order
Start with your most recent position, preferably your current employment, and work backwards through your employment history.
3. Use a Consistent Employment Date Format
List your employment dates in the MM.YYYY – MM.YYYY format instead of using years only. This provides greater accuracy and clarity.
4. Include the Country of Employment
For each employer, specify the country where you worked. This helps provide context for your employment history.
5. Match Your Position Title to Your Employment Reference
Ensure your job title matches the title stated in your employment reference letter. If you were promoted during your employment, list each position separately. Likewise, if you progressed from part-time to full-time employment, clearly indicate each stage.
6. Specify Your Employment Type
Include your employment type next to each position title, such as:
Full-time
Part-time (include hours per week)
Casual
7. Describe Your Key Duties
Include at least five bullet points outlining your main responsibilities for each role. If you have an employment reference letter, your duties should closely reflect those listed in the reference.
8. Provide Complete Qualification Details
For each qualification, include:
The full name of the educational institution (including the country)
The full qualification or degree name
The study period in MM.YYYY – MM.YYYY format
9. Include Only Relevant Registrations or Licences
List only registrations, licences, or professional courses that are directly relevant to your nominated occupation. Exclude unrelated qualifications or certifications.
10. Do Not Include Referees
There is no need to include referees or their contact details. Your CV is being prepared for the Department as part of your visa application, not for employment purposes.
